The Grates Make A Home Away From Home

The Grates are a bit like fish out of water these days — and loving it.

The Australian trio has relocated from Melbourne to Brooklyn, which they’re using as a home base while touring to promote their second album, “Teeth Lost, Hearts Won,” and starting work on their third. There’s been a bit of culture shock, according to singer Patience Hodgson, but mostly of the positive kind.

“It’s been great, lots of fun,” says Hodgson, 26. “We take long bike rides, occasionally into Manhattan. We go to some indie movie theaters. We joined a food co-op and work there a few hours a week, which is amazing, and we meet a lot of people there, locals, who give us tips on things to do and the best pizza places and stuff like that.”

Hodgson describes The Grates’ new material as “bubble gum psychedelic ... very upbeat” and expects to have the album out in 2010. And she says she and her bandmates are considering staying in the States even after it’s done.

“It all comes down to what you can afford and what sort of visas you can get,” Hodgson says. “We’re all enjoying it. We go through periods when we don’t think we’ll ever leave and want to stay forever, but you can’t help but get homesick. That just happens; even if you come from somewhere that’s not good, it’s where your family is.

“I haven’t written any homesick songs, at least. I’m gonna try not to do that.”

The Grates perform Saturday (Nov. 7) at the Magic Stick, 4120 Woodward Ave., Detroit. Doors open at 8 p.m. Tickets are $8 in advance, $10 day of show. Call (313) 833-9700 or visit www.majesticdetroit.com.
