AFI Soldiered Through Producer Changes On New Album

AFI had a bit of an adventure making its eighth album, “Crash Love.”

The modern rock quartet initially planned to record the set — which came out in September and debuted at No. 12 on the Billboard 200 chart — with Jerry Finn, who had produced its 2003 breakthrough “Sing the Sorrow” but passed away in 2008. The next choice was David Bottrill, whose heavyweight credentials include Tool, Dream Theater, Staind and more. But that proved to be a fruitless association.

“We got with him on the basis of his past work,” says AFI guitarist Jade Puget. “He’s a great guy, but when we started making the record it wasn’t coming out sounding the way we wanted it to, so we had to make a pretty difficult change and start from scratch, recording the songs all over again.”

The group had better luck with Joe McGrath and then with Jacknife Lee, who AFI brought in “just to get some variation on the record, sonically. He’s Irish and uses a lot of electronic stuff and sounds that are unique to AFI. We’re really happy with the way it came out.”

Nevertheless, Puget and company hope any ear candy doesn’t detract from the fact that “Crash Love” represents a return to a “more straightforward” sound than 2006’s gold-certified “Decemberunderground.”

“That was our intention for this one,” says Puget, 35, who also plays in an electronicflavored side band, Blaqk Audio, with AFI frontman Davey Havok. “(‘Crash Love’) is a lot less polished. It’s a lot grimier than anything we’ve ever done. Our last record had a lot of complex layers, electronics and stuff. This time we really stressed simplicity and being straightforward.”

AFI and Gallows perform at 7:30 p.m. Monday (Nov. 9) at the Fillmore Detroit, 2115 Woodward Ave. Tickets are $26 in advance, $28 day of show. Call (313) 961-5451 or visit www.livenation.com.
