When Jon Spencer sidelined his Blues Explosion and teamed with Madder Rose’s Matt Verta-Ray in Heavy Trash five years ago, “it was sort of a lark, a couple of friends ... hanging out and playing rockabilly.”

But with the release of their third Heavy Trash album, “Midnight Soul Serenade,” Spencer, 44, notes that the group has become a more serious concern.

“It was very much a studio experiment at the beginning, then evolved into a real live touring band,” he explains. “I think this third record ... is us growing up and maturing. It’s not the birth, not the growth spurt. Now we’ve finally arrived.”

“The bottom line is, it’s enjoyable. That’s why we keep doing it.”

Spencer — who’s planning a 2010 reissue series for the “deep hiatus” Blues Explosion — says he and Verta-Ray recorded enough songs for “Midnight Soul Serenade” to comprise two albums. They ultimately decided to eschew the “familiar” in favor of putting on “some different kinds of songs, different sounds and different feelings.

“There were a lot of great songs we had,” Spencer explains, “but some of them were kind of familiar and comfortable, uptempo rock ‘n’ roll numbers. There’s nothing wrong with that, but we just wanted to present a different picture, a different kind of record.

“I think that’s what we’ve got here.”

Heavy Trash, Duende and others perform Thursday (Nov. 11) at the Pike Room in The Crofoot, 1 S. Saginaw St., Pontiac. Doors open at 8 p.m. Tickets are $10. Call (248) 858-9333 or visit www.thecrofoot.com.
