Former Faces keyboardist Ian McLagan and Savoy Brown, who he’s opening for this weekend at the Magic Bag in Ferndale, have some history together — including some in Detroit.

“The Faces opened for Savoy Brown when we played the Eastown (Theatre) the first time we went” to Detroit, McLagan, 64, remembers. “The next time, they opened for us. Now, I’m opening for them again.

“I haven’t seen them in 30, 40 years. They’re more bluesy stuff than I do, but I think it fits. It’ll be a good show with the two of us together.”

It’ll also be a different show on McLagan’s end. Rather than touring with his regular Bump Band, the keyboardist and songwriter, who now resides in Austin, Texas, is touring only with a bass player and doing a more stripped-down kind of show that allows him to mine his catalog a bit deeper and interact with the audience more.

“This gives me a chance to get deeper and rock out as well, and talk a little bit more — chat between songs, tell a few stories, tell a few lies ... ” McLagan explains with a laugh.

Some of the shows have been filmed for an upcoming documentary about McLagan, who’s starting to work on material for a follow-up to his last album, 2008’s “Never Say Never.” He’s also planning some sort of Faces-related tour for 2010 with bandmates Ron Wood and Kenney Jones and with guest singers standing in for Rod Stewart, who won’t be taking part in those shows.

Savoy Brown and Ian McLagan perform Saturday (Nov. 21) at the Magic Bag, 22920 Woodward Ave., Ferndale. Doors open at 8 p.m. Tickets are $20. Call (248) 544-3030 or visit www. themagicbag.com.
