Rapper Shwayze says that he and partner Cisco Adler “really wanted to take the next step” on their second album, “Let It Beat,” after riding the wave of an MTV reality show to success for their 2008 debut “Shwayze.”

“We want people to know this is a career band,” explains Adler, 31. “We don’t want to be the group that made that one song (‘Buzzin’) they listened to that summer (2008).

“The reality show was our launch pad for this act; it was, ‘OK, we’re confident in our music and confident enough that we are musicians first.’ Now it’s nice to just settle back into the role of being musicians and making a record and going on tour with it.”

Shwayze, 24, (né Aaron Smith) acknowledges that taking the act to TV first created some skepticism he and Adler are still trying to overcome. “People who have heard a song or two maybe have some sort of pre-conceived thing about us,” he notes. “Those are the haters ... the people who want you to have a sophomore slump. But I don’t think that’s gonna be it for us.”

“Let It Beat” does take a more musical path, including guest collaborations with Snoop Dogg, the Knux, the Cars’ Ric Ocasek, Bad Brains’ Darryl Jenifer and Roy Bittan from Bruce Springsteen’s E Street Band. It also incorporates elements of New Wave rock (“Crazy For You”) and even a full-on ballad (“Heart and Soul”).

“We’re musicians first,” says Adler. “We happened to end up on TV to spread the word about our (music).”

A “funny, big movie,” called “Get Jack’s Tickets,” is also in the offing for 2010 with director Nicholaus Goossen (“Grandma’s Boy,” “The Shortcut”).

Shwayze performs with LMFAO, Far East Movement, Paradiso Girls and Space Cowboy Friday (Nov. 27) at Clutch Cargo’s, 65 E. Huron St., Pontiac. Doors open at 7 p.m. Tickets are $20. Call (248) 333-2362 or visit www. clutchcargos.com.
