They’ve appeared on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” Their song “My Body” was an iTunes Single of the Week. And their shows are selling out.

Clearly, as Young The Giant drummer Francois Comtois says, “Things seem to be working out pretty well. Momentum seems to be picking up.”

The modern rock quintet from Irvine, Calif. — high school friends whose self-titled debut album came out on CD this week after a digital release in October — has been waiting a while to get to this point. The group, originally named The Jakes, has been playing together since 2004 and steadily built its story by winning an online contest to open for Kings of Leon, playing at the South By Southwest Music + Media Conference and having songs placed in MTV’s “The Real World: Brooklyn” and A&E’s “The Beast.”

The group, meanwhile, works in “a very democratic process,” according to Comtois, 22. “Everyone throws in equally.” And while sometimes that leads to labored situations, the “My Body” single was reasonably effortless.

“That’s one of those songs that came out almost immediately,” Comtois recalls. “We just jammed it out, and it was a really quick process. It just sounded like it does on the record after about a half hour in the studio.

“Sometimes that happens, and it’s great. It really depends on the individual song every time.”

Young The Giant and Pomegranates perform Sunday, Jan. 30, in the Pike Room at The Crofoot, 1 S. Saginaw St., Pontiac. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $8 in advance, $10 day of show. Call 248-858-9333 or visit www.thecrofoot.com.
