The Upbeat: Graveside Manner
Founded: January 2008 in Westland.
Members: Grim Gravesly (aka Nick Brennan), vocals and guitar (Lake Orion); Dead End Eddie Doyle (Edward Orlowski), guitar (Dearborn); George Morbid (George Charbenau), upright bass and vocals (Southfield); Skatello (Scott Catallo), drums (Westland).
Influences: The Misfits, the Meteors, Johnny Cash, Jack Scott, Hank Williams, Marty Robbins, the Paladins, Koffin Kats, Twistin' Tarantulas.
Day Jobs: Brennan is a production supervisor at Great Lakes Recycling and co-owns a special effects company with Charbenau. Catallo is an architect at Norr LLC in Detroit, while Orlowski and Charbenau are faculty members at the College of Architecture and Design at Lawrence Technical University in Southfield.
What's In a Name?: Graveside Manner took its name from a 1965 book by Gahan Wilson. "We went through about 30 names before we came up with this one," says Charbenau, who credits Orlowski with the idea. "We thought it was kind of the opposite of bedside manor. A lot of people spell the last name M-a-n-o-r, but that's not right."
Digging In: Prior to Graveside Manner, Charbenau, former student Catallo and Orlowski played in a Misfits tribute band called Stifsim. "The only time we could get gigs doing that was Halloween," he explains, "and we wanted to play year-round, so now that's what we do." The horror motif was inspired by the Misfits connection and also by being "real horror and Halloween buffs" with Brennan. "We kind of ran with it," Charbenau says, "and it's worked out great."
All the Pretty Ghouls: Charbenau says that Detroit's "huge rockabilly scene" brings out a colorful audience that the band enjoys playing for. "You get a bunch of greasers," ho notes, "and all these girls who want to look like pin-ups. They all get dolled up and have a good time."
Hear 'em: Graveside Manner's first album, 2009's "Six Feet Deep," is sold out, but last year's "Devil Girl" is still available.
