Umphrey’s McGee plans to put out some new music this year. The group just isn’t sure how.

Early reports had the jam band, whose members live primarily in Chicago and Indiana and record at guitarist Jake Cinninger’s studio in Niles, releasing a series of digital EPs to follow its 2009 album “Mantis.” But keyboardist Joel Cummins says those plans are in flux.

“That’s what we’d planned on doing for a long time,” Cummins, 36, notes, “and we’ve recently entered into a couple conversations about potentially putting out maybe an EP and an album. So it’s all kind of in the works.

“It’s an interesting climate in the music world right now. We’re trying to do everything we can to put music in front of the most ears possible. I think our fans are interested in getting as much music as possible; that’s really the biggest thing that they’re looking for, and we’re always trying to serve that appetite.”

However the sextet winds up distributing that music, Cummins says Umphrey’s McGee has plenty to put out when the time comes.

“We have a lot of stuff that’s finished and ready to go that we’ve been working on for a while,” he says. “We probably have 12 to 14 things we’ve already recorded, and we have a couple more we’re gonna be finishing up ... towards the end of February, when we have a little time off. There’s always so many things that are kind of in the process, happening but not finished, waiting for us to have time to really give ’em a look.

“It’s nice to have that ability to just stockpile things like that. We’ll just see where the cards fall when it’s time to put something out.”

Umphrey’s McGee and Orchard Lounge perform Saturday, Feb. 5, at the Fillmore Detroit, 2115 Woodward Ave. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $27. Call 313-961-5450 or visit www.livenation.com.
