After logging another stint in rehab last September, Justin Townes Earle is pleased to report hes healthy and back on track but cant promise hell stay there forever.

I never try to make any bets on the future, the 29-year-old son of fellow singer-songwriter Steve Earle notes with a chuckle. I fall off the wagon once in awhile. Booze and cocaine are so easy to fall into, and eventually it catches you and you take care of it again and so on and so forth.

Luckily Ive never relapsed and decided I wanted to do heroin again; thats the only plus in all of it. So who knows. Ive led a life that proves nothing is what it seems.

Musically, however, the younger Earle remains at the top of his game. His 2010 album Harlem River Blues was widely praised and even he thinks we got the mix of old and new really right on that one. Now hes considering his next move, which hed like to be an album focused on all the different forms of music that have come out of Memphis over the years but that he may record in London, where he plans to move later this year from his current base in New York.

Ive got some really good friends over there, and great musicians, says Earle, who was named one of GQs 25 Most Stylish Men in the World last year. Ive always traveled and Ive been around Europe a lot, but Ive never been able to shoot off and see all the little places on the outskirts like that and actually be, like, a tourist.

Im not getting any younger, and Im not gonna want to do all that stuff eventually. So I want to go ahead and get it done and spend some time somewhere else. I think itll be good for me.

Justin Townes Earle and Jessica Lea Mayfield perform Wednesday, Feb. 9, at the Magic Stick, 4120 Woodward Ave., Detroit. Doors open at 8 p.m. Tickets are $12 in advance, $14 day of show. Call 313-833-9700 or visit www.majesticdetroit.com.
