R&B singer Musiq Soulchild plays his first concert of 2011 this weekend in Detroit. And he’s approaching it as a fresh start he feels comes with the turn of the calendar.

“I always like to reintroduce myself in a way,” explains the Philadelphia-born Musiq, 33 (real name Taalib Johnson). It’s just a personal thing I do. It kind of keeps me in a fresh perspective and keeps me from getting jaded or whatever other negative attributes come from doing what you do for a long time. It keeps that hunger, that urgency.

“That’s how I choose to approach it, and the people feel it, too. When I come out on stage, I’m approaching them like, ‘Yo, I’m back! Let’s have a good time!’ and not like, ‘Yeah, you already know who it is. Same old same ol’ ... ’ ”

Musiq is up for a Grammy on Sunday, Feb. 13, for “We’re Still Friends,” his 2010 collaboration with Kirk Whalum. But mostly he’s looking forward to delivering his sixth album, “Musiq in the Magiq,” this year, following up 2008’s “Onmyradio.”

“It’s recorded,” says Musiq, who’s winnowing the final track list from 50 possible songs — including the first single, “Anything.”

“There’s a lot of songs floating around in so many different directions. I’m definitely going to maintain the soulful, positive energy that I’ve had on all my other projects, but hopefully taking a fresher approach so it doesn’t feel stale or outdated.”

Musiq Soulchild and Carl Thomas perform at 8 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 12, at the Detroit Opera House, 1526 Broadway, Detroit. The show is sold out. Call 313-237-7464 or visit www.motopera.com.
