It’s been 25 years since Los Angeles funk rockers Fishbone released their first album, “In Your Face.” But for co-founder and bassist John Norwood Fisher it feels like “we’re only about a half-hour in.”

“I feel very fortunate in the band that the program is to be expansive,” says Fisher, 45, who remains from the original 1979 lineup with singer-saxophonist Angelo Moore, while trumpeter “Dirty” Walter A. Kibby II returned last year after a seven-year break.

“We keep constantly trying to dig within ourselves to find a beauty of discovery. We jam a lot and we try to open ourselves up into the space of nothingness in order to create something brand-spanking new. It’s very difficult.”

Fishbone, whose last album came out in 2006, is working on material for a new EP that Fisher says will be out this summer. Meanwhile, the group is also the subject of a documentary, “Everyday Sunshine,” that premiered in 2010 and should also be headed to wider release and to DVD this year.

“It’s my life and me talking about my life, so it’s hard for me to judge the entertainment value,” Fisher notes. “But we’re encouraged by the response. We’re not sure if it’s the congregation or if it’s people who don’t ... know about the band, but it’s great to see the story get out there and in front of all kinds of people.”

Fishbone and Sista Otis perform Tuesday, Feb. 22, at the Magic Bag, 22920 Woodward Ave., Ferndale. Doors open at 8 p.m. Tickets are $15. Call 248-544-3030 or visit www.themagicbag.com.
