Will Lee has seen plenty of the world’s myriad Beatles tribute bands, and he even likes many of them.

But Lee thinks his group, The Fab Faux, does something the others don’t.

“We were never interested in doing the lookalike thing,” explains Lee, the bassist in the “Late Show with David Letterman” band, who formed The Fab Faux in 1998 with “Conan” bandleader Jimmy Vivino. “Our goal never had anything to do with pretending to be anything besides ourselves doing what we consider to be classical music.

“So we like to think of ourselves as a band that actually brings the record to the stage. That’s been our goal since day one. That’s one of the few things we all agree on — the fact that Beatles music deserves to be done right.”

Through the years The Fab Faux has learned to play nearly the entire Beatles catalog and enjoys performing entire albums — such as 1969’s “Abbey Road,” which the group will do in Ann Arbor. And Lee’s work on “Late Night” and playing at Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremonies has put him in close proximity to the surviving Beatles, though he senses their feeling about the Fab Faux, and tribute bands in general, is ambivalent.

“They’re aware and, I’m sure, very annoyed,” Lee says. “I’ve tried to explain it to them. I think they probably can’t imagine the depth that we go into, how much we delve into the recordings and even isolated tracks from various bootleg sources. So once they find out, I think they’ll be really pleased.

“But for now, I don’t know. Paul (McCartney) has a pretty happening Beatles cover band at the moment, too, so there you go ... ”

The Fab Faux performs “Abbey Road” and other Beatles favorites at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at the Michigan Theater, 603 E. Liberty St., Ann Arbor. Tickets are $39.50-85. Call 734-668-8397 or visit www.michtheater.org.
