Raveonettes dodged breakup before new album

Raveonettes fans will hear something different when the Danish duo releases its latest album, “Raven in the Grave” on Tuesday, April 5. But the group’s Sharin Foo says the set’s more ethereal, rhythmic approach was not by design.

“We’re not trying to change things just for the sake of changing things,” Foo, 31, explains. “It’s a very intuitive process when we make a record, just whatever we feel drawn towards and what we gravitate towards and what we get inspired by at that moment in time.

“And I think this time it’s much less extroverted and bright-sounding. It’s darker and more reflective. It’s kind of a subtle rebellion, I would say.”

But Foo acknowledges the sonic shift was inspired a bit by some soul-searching she and partner Sune Rose Wagner — who both now reside in the U.S. — did upon reaching the 10-year mark of the band.

“We were sort of questioning whether the Raveonettes were even going to be a band anymore,” Foo says. “Sometimes you have to ask yourself and each other if there’s more to offer, if you feel engaged and if we still have justification to be in the world. It was really asking, ‘What’s next? What’s going to happen now?’

“And then we started sending ideas back and forth to each other, and in a funny way it became one of the best creative conversations we’ve had in a really long time. We just got very inspired, and then we didn’t have to discuss it so much anymore. We just made the music and the record, so it worked out great.”

The Raveonettes and Tamaryn perform on Sunday, April 3, at the Magic Stick, 4120 Woodward Ave., Detroit. Doors open at 8 p.m. Tickets are $15. Call 313-833-9700 or visit www.majesticdetroit.com.
