Screaming girls one of the perks for pop sensation Greyson Chance

Being a pop sensation at age 13 has its pluses — just as Greyson Chance.

“We’re outside the bus, and there’s lots of screaming girls outside,” the piano-playing Oklahoma singer says by telephone from a show in Denver. And, he adds, “I wouldn’t call it strange. I get a little bit emotional sometimes when I see it, honestly. I’ve come a long way.”

Indeed, Chance has been a phenomenon since April 2010, when he posted a clip of himself performing Lady Gaga’s “Paparazzi” in his home town of Edmond, Okla., on YouTube. The clip has been viewed more than 30 million times and caught the attention of Ellen DeGeneres, who made Chance the first artist signed to her eleveneleven label. His current single, “Waiting the Lines,” was the top-selling physical single in the country for four weeks, and Chance is working on his debut album — with hitmakers Ron Fair and The Matrix and songs that are “all about broken hearts” — for release this summer.

“I didn’t expect any of this at all, and what we’ve been through right now has been so incredible,” says Chance, who’s also a straight-A student working with a tutor and online courses while on the road. “I just think it’s a blessing from God that I’m here and I have all the support that I have.

“And we’re selling records, so obviously we’re doing something good.”

Greyson Chance and Cody Simpson perform Sunday, April 17, at the Royal Oak Music Theatre, 318 W. Fourth St. Doors open at 6 p.m. Tickets are sold out. Call 248-399-2980 or visit www.royaloakmusictheatre.com.
