Interview:
Singer-songwriter Sam Bradley moves beyond brush with "Twilight" fame
Sam Bradley made a name for himself with “Too Far Gone,” which he co-wrote with “Twilight” star Robert Pattinson and was featured (under the title “Never Think”) on the 2008 film’s chart-topping soundtrack. But Bradley says any notoriety from that break has largely subsided.
“Two, three years later, what’s left is just the people that like the music,” says the British-born Bradley, 24, who took up songwriting at 17 after working as a waiter at a club run by his mother, who’s also a singer-songwriter. “I only have people come out now to see me. There’s no more coming out because of the association” with “Twilight.”
Bradley — who resides between England and Canada and, occasionally, Nashville — has released a pair of EPs, a self-titled set in 2009 and last year’s “Zuni.” Currently playing his first headlining tour with a new band he’s put together, he’s excited about hitting the studio again with hopes of putting together a full-length album. He’s been talking to labels “since the ‘Twilight’ thing, really” but is proceeding carefully.
“To say I’m not in a rush is not true, but I do understand it takes patience,” Bradley explains. “I want to find the right situation for me, and I don’t need to rush into anything because I really do want to do this for the rest of my life. I want this to be my career.
“So hopefully there will be some more touring, some more writing, some recording. I would love a couple of lucky breaks — bring on some more ‘Twilights’ so I can keep funding this. But until then I’ll just keep doing my own thing, at the best rate I can.”
Sam Bradley and Holly Conlan perform Thursday, May 12, at the Magic Bag, 22920 Woodward Ave., Ferndale. Doors open at 8 p.m. Tickets are $12. Call 248-544-3030 or visit www.themagicbag.com.
