He's not in the lineup for this weekend's Movement Electronic Music Festival at Hart Plaza, but German DJ/producer Paul van Dyk is happy to kick things off at the official opening party Friday night at Detroit's Blue Nightclub.

"Obviously there are going to be quite a lot of people in town," says the Berlin-based van Dyk (real name Matthias Paul), who was named the world's top DJ twice by Resident Advisor magazine and has been in the Top 10 every year since 1998. "And there's a direct connection between Berlin and Detroit from the past that still exists.

"But every single gig is somewhat special. What I would like to play, the sounds I bring across, everything down to my interaction to the audience...at the end of the day every gig is individual and a really personal journey between all of us in the room. That makes it always special."

Giving this year's tour an extra edge, however, is its visual design, which was done by the same firm that designed Muse's captivating concert production on its 2010 tour.

"I didn't want to just stand in front of an impressive LED screen for three hours," explains van Dyk, 39, who will be previewing material from his upcoming new album, "Evolution." "The best production on the road the last three years was Muse, so I approached these guys and they were really up for it.

"I didn't go to these guys to just have something like Muse; I went because they are creative enough to come up with something that translates my musical idea of evolution into visuals. It's very original, nothing you will ever see twice, which is what I wanted."

Paul van Dyk and Anthony Attalia performs Friday, May 27, at Bleu Nightclub, 1540 Woodward Ave., Detroit. Doors open at 9 p.m. Tickets are $60 and $30. Call 313-974-7799 or visit www.bleudetroit.com.
