Australian-born Lenka stays on eastbound trajectory

Australian-born pop singer Lenka is following an adage of go east, young woman.

Moving from her native New South Wales to Sydney in her homeland where she trained with Cate Blanchett at the Australian Theater for Young People Lenka (ne Kripac) moved to Los Angeles after the release of her self-titled 2008 debut album and now resides in Brooklyn that is when shes not on the road promoting her sophomore set, Two, which came out in April.

Im a bit of a gypsy, explains Lenka, 33. I am preferring the East Coast, actually. I think largely because being from Australia, which is hot and dry, it wasnt that exciting for me to be in another environment (L.A.) thats hot and dry.

So Im actually enjoying the seasons and the nature here and in the surrounding areas. Its very fertile and different from the hot and dry.

Two reflects Lenkas upbeat mood not only with her locale but her life as well, having married graphic artist James Gulliver Hancock earlier this year. I wanted to write songs that reflect where Im at, she explains, and that is to do with love and being very happy in love and wanting to celebrate that and put that energy into the songs. So its more energetic and danceable and big king of poppy songs.

But with her husband choosing to stay mostly at home, Lenka isnt sure her next album will sound the same way. We have a lot of time apart, so my next album will probably be all about being lonely and separated, she says with a laugh.

Lenka and Elizabeth & the Catapult perform Thursday, June 16, at the Pike Room in the Crofoot, 1 S. Saginaw St., Pontiac. Doors open at 8 p.m. Tickets are $12 in advance, $14 day of show. Call (248) 858-9333 or visit www.thecrofoot.com.
