CCR's music has "legs," with or without original frontman

Stu Cook says there’s no real secret as to why Creedence Clearwater Revisited is still drawing crowds after 17 years — and counting.

“Well, you know this music’s got legs,” says Cook, 66, who along with Creedence Clearwater Revival rhythm section mate Doug “Cosmo” Clifford leads this CCR in playing their original band’s hits. “We’ve got three generations of fans now. They’ve found our music or it’s found them, so it’s enabled us to keep working.

“The fans just love the music, and I think they’ve validated what we’re doing over and over again. And we’re still having a great time.”

Cook and Clifford, meanwhile, are reacting cautiously to recent comments by John Fogerty, their estranged CCR bandmate, about working together again after breaking up acrimoniously in 1972. The three musicians have been on poor terms ever since, but Fogerty has indicated in some interviews that he’s softened and might consider a CCR reunion.

“He hasn’t spoke to me. He hasn’t spoken to Doug. Our people aren’t talking,” says Cook. “I don’t know what to make of it. Anything that I would say would just add more speculative fuel, and I don’t think that’s beneficial.

“If it’s true John is softening, good for him. Life is short ... so welcome to the club of guys who’ve done a fairly good job of coming to terms with their past successes — and failures. If it leads somewhere with (CCR), then great, but so far there’s nothing to really say about it yet.”

Creedence Clearwater Revisited and Slight Return perform at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, July 23 at the DTE Energy Music Theatre, Sashabaw Road east of I-75, Independence Township. Tickets are $34.50 pavilion, $10 lawn. Call 248-377-0100 or visit www.palacenet.com.
