Fall Out Boy's Patrick Sump ready for solo career

Even before Fall Out Boy decided to go on an open-ended hiatus, frontman Patrick Stump knew he’d be doing some work on his own — mostly because the music on his EP “Truant Wave” and on his aptly titled forthcoming album “Soul Punk” didn’t quite fit the band.

“I didn’t want to do that to the band,” explains Stump, 27, who acknowledges the distinct influence of Prince and Michael Jackson on his solo material. “I didn’t want to put too much of the wrong stamp on it, to put too much of my own thing in there when it wasn’t necessarily what the band wanted.

“This is a lot more of a distillation of my influences, and (the band) is supposed to be a combination of all of our influences.”

“Soul Punk” is due out Oct. 18, while Fall Out Boy’s other members are busy with their own projects including bassist Pete Wentz’s Black Cards and the Damned Things, which features guitarist Joe Trohman and drummer Andy Hurley. But Stump is sure we haven’t heard the last of Fall Out Boy, even though he says getting the group together at his point is “kind of like herding cats” — in other words, not easy.

“Everybody is just in different directions and doing their own things, but we intend to do the band again,” he says. “But when we do it, we want it to be for its own sake. So it’s about as on the books as, ‘Oh, some day we should do that,’ not like ‘Monday we’ll do it.’

“It’ll happen, though; I’m certain of that.”

Patrick Stump and Wyner Gordon perform Sunday, Aug. 7, at the Magic Bag, 22920 Woodward Ave., Ferndale. Doors open at 7 p.m. Tickets are $20. Call 248-544-3030 or visit www.themagicbag.com.
