Being on the road with Los Lobos is always a thrill for Texas’ Los Lonely Boys, who consider their Los Angeles friends to be elder statesmen of Latin rock and pseudo big brothers.

“It’s got a lot to do with growing up listening to their music and having great respect for what they’ve done not only for rock ’n’ roll but also Latin-American rock ’n’ roll,” explains bassist Jojo Garza, 31, the middle of the three brothers who comprise the group. “They’re an inspiration and an influence — a big influence for Los Lonely Boys, man. We’re doing more together (on stage) than we ever have, before, and after that you’ve always got something to think about.”

These days the trio is doing that thinking by and for itself. After a five-album run with Epic Records — which included the double-platinum self-titled 2004 release, a Grammy Award for Best New Artist and the Top 20 hit “Heaven,” Los Lonely Boys went their own way in 2009, launching their own Lonely Town Records label, which has released the group’s last two albums.

“It was a good run with Epic. There was nothing that was negative,” says JoJo. “We’ve always been in control of our music ... but there was always a lot of — aggressive suggestion, I guess you’d say.

“Now there’s a lot more we can do. We produced this record (“Rockpango,” which came out in March) ourselves. We’re able to do anything we want, really, whether it’s an album, a single, something for a movie or a commercial. It’s a really nice place to be in, man.”

Los Lonely Boys and Los Lobos perform at 8 p.m. Friday, Aug. 12, at the Meadow Brook Music Festival on the campus of Oakland University, Rochester Hills. Tickets are $35 pavilion, $10 lawn. Call 248-377-0100 or visit www.palacenet.com.
