Thirty-one years ago, after working with Frank Zappa and David Bowie and just as he was hooking up with Talking Heads, singer-guitarist Adrian Belew was part of a band called GaGa. There was no lady, or Lady, in the group, but the irony of that name in 2011 is not lost on Belew.

“I didn’t give it to her; she just took it,” Belew, 61, says with a laugh. “And she can have it. She’s destroyed it already.”

Belew, meanwhile, was far too busy to worry about that, however. He’s celebrating the 30th anniversary of joining yet another musical concern — King Crimson — with the 2 of a Perfect Trio tour that features Belew’s own Power Trio along with the Stick Men, which includes Tony Levin, who joined Crimson at the same time as Belew, and their latter-day bandmate Pat Mastelotto. The two entities perform together and intermingle, with all six musicians uniting at the end to play a set of Crimson songs.

Belew reports that “everyone’s loving it, and the shows are really exciting.” He adds they’re certainly keeping him, Levin and Mastelotto sharp in case Crimson leader Robert Fripp ever reactivates the group.

“That’s what we’re hoping,” Belew says, “but you know Robert; he’s an interesting personality and hard to read. We’ve spoken a few times, and I assured him that, ‘If you want to do (Crimson), let me know. I’m up for it.’

“But we don’t think he’s going to want to do anything for a while, which is why we forged ahead with this tour, which of course has his blessing. And we’ll see what happens, ’cause you never know with him or with anything related to Crimson.”

The Adrian Belew Power Trio and the Stick Men perform Friday, Oct. 7, at the Magic Bag, 22920 Woodward Ave., Ferndale. Doors open at 7 p.m. Tickets are $25. Call 248-544-3030 or visit www.themagicbag.com.
