It’s been 35 years since the heavy metal band Saxon formed in Yorkshire, England. But frontman Biff Byford says he hasn’t felt the passing of time.



“It feels like about three and a half years actually,” notes Byford, 60. “It seems to fly by. I don’t think anybody really expects to last that long. You just hope to be around a few years and sell a few albums.



“I was talking to (Whitesnake’s) David Coverdale about it, and he feels the same way. We were just young lads who could sing and got a good break, really.”

Saxon does not trade on its past, however. In June the quintet released its 19th album, “Call to Arms,” and it’s working on music for an independent film project called “Hybrid Theory” — with two of the new album’s songs slated for the soundtrack.



“We’ve done a bit of incidental music for it as well, so it’s kind of a new avenue for us,” Byford says. “It’s a bit of a shoot-’em-up film; some scientists get some alien DNA and mix it with human DNA and create a hybrid. Like all great films, it all goes wrong.



“A lot of our music is in the big action sequences; one of the songs is on when one of the (characters) is listening to his iPod and we’re on the iPod when he gets slaughtered. It should be good fun.”
