Minus The Bear formed in Seattle during 2001 as “just a side project band,” according to drummer Erin Tate. None of the members viewed it as a serious endeavor — or a lasting concern.

“We were all in other bands,” says Tate, 32. “We just met through hanging out in the music scene and in bars, and since we all played music and all played instruments we thought it would be fun to play together. We didn’t expect anything more than that, really.

“But within the first year, slowly all our other bands started breaking up. We were all used to working so hard with our regular bands we just started working hard in Minus The Bear.”

Tate says the group — which took its name from an offhand comment from a friend — is “pretty far done” with its fifth album, the follow-up to 2010’s “Omni.” And, he adds, things are still going as swimmingly now as they did when Minus The Bear first started.

“Strangely, after 10 years, we all get along insanely well,” Tate says. “It’s been 10 years of living life together, not just in the practice space and not just in the road and the recording studio, but we all hang out quite a bit as well. Even with your best friend or your significant other you always have your ups and downs; we’ve had plenty of both, but after 10 years it gets to be second nature. Nothing is really going to phase you, you know?”

Minus The Bear and the Velvet Teen perform Wednesday, Oct. 12, at Saint Andrews Hall, 431 E. Congress St., Detroit. Doors open at 7 p.m. Tickets are $20. Call 313-961-8137 or visit www.livenation.com.
