When a tornado tore through his home town of Joplin, Mo., in May, Christofer Drew — aka Never Shout Never — quickly stepped up to help.

He created a special video for “Time Travel,” the title track and first single from Never Shout Never’s latest album, and working with the United Way has raised more than $1 million to aid in the city’s recovery.

“It was the least I could do, y’know?,” says Drew, 20. “My house is fine, but my mom’s place, her apartment complex, was completely destroyed. Our bass player (Taylor MacFee) and merch guy’s houses got hit, too, our guitar player’s parent’s house. ... It as really intense, man.

“It was a time for gaining a little bit of perspective, for sure. It made you realize how fragile our entire means of life is; in a split second, your entire life can change or disappear. I’m just glad we could do something positive.”

Drew’s other significant move this year was the release of “Time Travel,” the songwriter and multi-instrumentalist’s third full-length album under the Never Shout Never name. But this time, more than just a one-man project Drew involved the entire quartet that he’s built for touring purposes

“One of my biggest priorities now is making the rest of the band feel like this is the (expletive) Band. I want it to be like that,” Drew explains. “I’ve been touring for about three and a half years now, and we had a six-piece band at one point. Now we’re down to four of us and all the guys are from Joplin, which is super awesome.

“So I want to make these guys feel like it’s all our band, where we’re playing rock ’n’ roll, looking at each other every night and doing exactly what we want and don’t give a damn what anybody says. We’re getting there, and the next (album) we’ll get even further there.”

Never Shout Never performs Tuesday, Nov. 1, at the Royal Oak Music Theatre, 318 W. Fourth St. Doors open at 6 p.m. Tickets are $20 advance, $23 day of show. Call 248-399-2980 or visit www.thecrofoot.com.
