Troy Andrews, better known as burgeoning New Orleans musical institution Trombone Shorty, proudly included a bit of Detroit on his latest album, "For True."

The energetic 25-year-old prodigy started with some Motown, enlisting Hall of Fame songwriter Lamont Dozier to co-write on the track "Encore." "I wrote the music to it, and it sounded old school -- but it had a little twist to it," Andrews recalls. "The label (Verve Forecast) actually contacted (Dozier) and he liked the song and he wrote to it. He sang and it and he sent it back to us, and I just tried to imitate what he was doing.

"He put his spin on it, which was great. It's a beautiful thing."

Kid Rock, meanwhile, joined a stellar list of album guests -- including Jeff Beck, Warren Haynes, Ledisi, Lenny Kravitz and others -- with an appearance on "Mrs. Orleans," which grew out of the two artists meeting at this year's New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival.

"We have a mutual friend in New Orleans," Andrew says, "and he brought him to my show. We talked for a little minute and hung out, and then my friend called and said 'Kid wants you to come out and be a guest with him on his show.' And I was like, 'Yeah...'

"So I asked him if he'd mind being on this track, 'Mrs. Orleans.' It sounded like something he could do. I sent him the track, he sent his verse back and it was perfect, just what I wanted."

Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue perform Friday, Nov. 18, at Saint Andrews Hall, 431 E. Congress St., Detroit. Doors open at 7 p.m. Tickets are $16 with a $40 four-pack. Call 313-961-8137 or visit www.livenation.com.
