The Tennessee rock quartet the Features has the good fortune of being signed to Kings of Leon's Serpents & Snakes label.

And, according to frontman Matt Pelham, the group has the even better fortune of creative freedom.

"They're really hands off," Pelham, 36, says of the Features' musical patrons. "They've always been supportive of us, more like friends than...a business partnership. If we're hanging out, the business stuff is never even discussed.

"So that's a great situation. It really lets us do what we want and what feels right without worrying about pleasing the record company."

For "Wilderness," the Features' third full-length album, that meant "just writing songs that we would enjoy listening to or enjoy playing live," according to Pelham. And the recording method reflected that ambition.

"We wanted it to sound pretty much like we do live, as if we were playing in a living room or something like that," he explains. "That's kind of how we recorded it, everything a little more up front.

"And a lot of the songs for this were written pretty quickly. We try not to be too precious about it. We just get in and do it, and if it feels right then it usually wounds up sounding right."

The Features, Joe Hertler & the Rainbow Seekers and Parker Munson perform Saturday, Sept. 19, at the Pike Room in the Crofoot, 1 S. Saginaw St., Pontiac. Doors open at 8 p.m. Tickets are $8 in advance, $10 day of show. Call (248) 858-9333 or visit www.thecrofoot.com.
