Peter Murphy is happy to have come and gone from Bauhaus again, but the British singer and goth rock icon took some lessons from the band's 2008 reunion album, "Go Away White," as he resumed his solo career with this year's "Ninth."

"There was some momentum caused by that last Bauhaus album," says Murphy, 54, who between projects also worked with nine inch nails' Trent Reznor and his late Dali's Car partner Mick Carn and appeared as The Cold One in last year's "The Twilight Saga: Eclipse" film. "We went in without any material and wrote and recorded in 17 days. I discovered the joy of not having to agonize over the songs and being spontaneous and capturing that vitality, warts and all.

"So I had an urge to continue that...with this album. It's where I work best. I like to work extremely fast, so that's how we approached ('Ninth')."

Murphy and producer David Baron also went for an organic approach on "Ninth," which is indeed his ninth solo album, gathering a group of players in upstate New York for straightforward, live-in-the-studio sessions.

"It's an album that's not over-experimental," Murphy says. "It's an album that's designed to be played in a room together with musicians in one location. It was written with that in mind and we recorded it like that.

"Anybody can make a something sound like a proper record these days; that's just a ProTools trick. It's rare when you hear record that plays live so well, which I knew this one would do."

Peter Murphy, She Wants Revenge and Hussle Club perform Friday, Nov. 25, at the Crofoot Ballroom, 1 S. Saginaw St., Pontiac. Doors open at 8 p.m. Tickets are $25 in advance, $28 day of show. Call (248) 858-9333 or visit www.thecrofoot.com.
