Detroit will always have a soft spot for Savoy Brown founder Kim Simmonds.

"Detroit was the first American city we had big success in the 60s when we were touring there," says Simmonds, 63, who founded the group as the Savoy Brown Blues Band during 1966 in England and has shepherded it through more than 80 members, including future members of Foghat, Fleetwood Mac, the Kinks, Black Sabbath and UFO.

"We were doing well, but all of a sudden when it came to Detroit and places like the Grande (Ballroom), we had this explosion of a fan base. So therefore we would come back three, four times a year and try to really capitalize on our fan base there. Detroit was where we really started to think, 'We can take this further...' "

Savoy Brown released a new album this year called "Savoy Moon," which Simmonds -- who also performs as a solo act -- considers "some of our best material since 'Street Corner Talking' " in 1971. And, the singer-guitarist adds, he has little trouble flashing back to the spirit of those early days even 45 years after the band formed.

"Luckily I've been able to retain who I was when I was 16 years old," Simmonds says. "When I look at pictures from back then, I see this young guy who looks pretty happy...and then I check out YouTube from a date we did a couple days ago, and of course it's hard to look at yourself now because so many years have passed and you're that much older, but I think I saw the same guy up there on stage, the same person. So that was encouraging."

Savoy Brown performs Friday, Dec. 2, at the Magic Bag, 22920 Woodward Ave., Ferndale. Doors open at 8 p.m. Tickets are $25. Call 248-544-3030 or visit www.themagicbag.com.
