Ty Stone plans a quiet holiday homecoming in Detroit

It’s been a busy year for Ty Stone, including plenty of touring with mentor Kid Rock (including Rock’s three Detroit stadium shows), Uncle Kracker and Jamey Johnson as well as continuing work on his national debut album, which the Downriver singer-songwriter hopes to have out in 2012.

So an Acoustic Christmas show seems like just the right note on which to end the year.

“I like to do a May show and a night before Thanksgiving show (in the area) and I didn’t get to do either this year,” notes Stone, 34, who released his “American Style” CD independently. “People keep e-mailing me — ‘When are you coming to Detroit?’ So I got some friends together and we’re going to do a songwriter night where everyone sings a Christmas song and some of their own stuff and just have a good time.

“I just want to get everyone in a room at the same time and have a fun party and get to see some of my favorite people sing.”

Stone, meanwhile, plans to do plenty of singing in the new year. He just completed a video for the song “Anywhere’s Better” that he hopes to land on CMT in January. And he’s been working on yet another album, which he calls “a pleasure project” of “country/soul/funk” that’s separate from what he’s recording for Atlantic Records — and which Stone says is keeping him from getting frustrated about the moribund status of that album, which has been finished since June.

“I just don’t think they’re putting anyone’s record out until you find success with a single, so hopefully ‘Anywhere’s Better’ will be the ticket,” he explains. “So I’m doing this other thing just to do something a little different musically and keep my enjoyment of music going. It may never come out, but it’s a lot of fun and I feel great about it and it’s making new music, which is the most fun part of this business.”

Ty Stone’s Acoustic Christmas takes place Friday, Dec. 23, at the Park Bar, 2040 Park Ave., Detroit. Doors open at 8 p.m. Admission is $10. Call 313-962-2933 or visit www.parkbardetroit.com.
