It’s been 40 years since The Whispers released their first two albums, “The Whispers’ Love Story” and “Life and Breath” — a fact that gives co-founder Walter Scott a bit of pause.

“We just marvel at the fact — if anybody would have told us we’d be here 40 years later doing what we love to do and getting paid for it, we never would have believed it,”

“We kind of feel like we played a joke on someone, ’cause we’d have done this for free if they would have let us — that’s how much we loved it,” says Scott, 62, a native of Fort Worth, Texas, who started the R&B vocal group in Los Angeles with his twin brother, Wallace. The group has released 20 albums and scored hits such as “Rock Steady,” “And The Beat Goes On,” “Lady” and “It’s a Love Thing.”

“So 40 years, it truly is in our eyes an amazing thing.”

The Whispers’ last album, the gospel set “Thankful,” came out in 2009. Looking forward, Scott says the group would “like to do a couple more secular albums,” though it would also like to work again with Detroit gospel star Fred Hammond, who produced five songs on “Thankful.” There’s also talk about re-recording some of the older songs the Whispers “weren’t completely satisfied with when we first did them,” Scott says.

“The problem is that a group of our age that has been around so long, we don’t have a major record label that’s going to help us do anything,” he explains. “We’ve got some original songs in the can. If we can get a distributor that really gives us a shot to be successful, we want to do that, so hopefully something will happen this year.”

The Whispers perform at 8 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 9, at Sound Board in the Motor City Casino and Hotel, 2901 Grand River Blvd., Detroit. Tickets are $43 and $41. Call 313-237-7711 or visit www.motorcitycasino.com.
