R&B singer Charles Bradley has been "singing since I was a baby," but he just put out his first album, "No Time For Dreaming," in 2011 -- at the age of 63.

Suffice to say that there have been plenty of moments of doubt and despair along the way.

"I got to a point where I wasn't sure it was ever going to happen," says the Florida-born Bradley, who now lives in Brooklyn and records for the vintage soul-showcasing Daptone Records label. "Somehow, at the last tick, the last straw, things just made a U-turn and caught me before I lost faith in myself. It took a long time coming, but I did find it, and now I'm just trying to hold onto it."

Bradley -- who was turned onto music first in church and then after seeing James Brown perform -- actually began recording in 2002. Daptone released a series of singles with him singing on his own and with bands such as the Bullets and the Menahan Street Band. But with "No Time For Dreaming" out, Bradley plans to make up for lost time.

"We've already started on another album," Bradley says. "I told Tom (Brenneck, his producer and co-writer), 'We've got to get in there now and get it out of the way~!' So there's two (song) we're working on right now, and I'll keep pushing him to get me in there and keep going until we have something to put out again, as soon as we can."

Charles Bradley & his Extraordinaires and Little Barrie perform Sunday, Feb. 12, at the Magic Bag, 22920 Woodward Ave., Ferndale. Doors open at 8 p.m. Tickets are $18. Call 248-544-3030 or visit www.themagicbag.com.
