Wayne Static says that putting his band Static-X on ice and starting a solo career has been "liberating," which means it will be a long while at least before we see the group again.

"I wouldn't say the band is broken up official or that we hate each other," says Static (ne Wells), a native of Shelby, Mich., whose family regular makes the rip across state to see his Detroit-area shows. "Static-X is this weird band where none of us are friends, anyway. We never hung out. The only time we saw each other was on stage or in a studio.

"At some point in the future I could see us getting back together and doing something again. But we were all king of tired of each other and tired of doing the same thing, so it was time to move on."

Static released his first solo album, "Pighammer," in October, and he's confident that his enthusiasm for his new situation is audible on its raw, jagged tracks.

"I got to do what I wanted to do -- which is what I tried to do on every Static-X record, but when you're working with other people you have to keep compromising, and it turns into something that's a little bit different than what you envisioned," he explains. "This time I wrote everything by myself in the studio, and no one changed it. It's the very pure vision that I had for the songs.

"Strangely enough it's what I envisioned for Static-X in the beginning -- a lot more electronics and loops and things like that. It was nice to be able to see it through the way I wanted."

Wayne Static, Polkadot Cadaver and Defiler perform Saturday, Feb. 18, at Harpo's, 14238 Harper, Detroit. Doors open at 5 p.m. Tickets are $15. Call (313) 824-1700 or visit www.harposconcerttheater.com
