Marsha Ambrosius went into this year's Grammy Awards with two nominations -- Best R&B Performance and Best R&B Song, both for her single "Far Away." She didn't take home any hardware, but it was a vindicating start for Ambrosious' solo career after the end of her band Floetry,

" 'Far Away' meant so much to me, just as a song, and I really felt it deserved a Grammy nod," says the British-born Ambrosius, 34, who's first solo album, "Late Nights & Early Mornings," debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 chart in March of 2011. "I'm so satisfied with that, everything else is a bonus -- a perk, if you will."

"Late Nights..." still has plenty of life in it; Ambrosius -- who did some work with Dr. Dre immediately after Floetry ended -- is planning an "intimate, unplugged" tour later this year, and she's hoping to release another single from the album. But she's also been working on her second solo set, whose title she's not yet revealing, collaborating with her brother Marvin, Shanice Williams, Jerry Abbott and "Late Nights..." cohort Sterling Simms.

"The new one is songwriting at its finest for me," Ambrosius says. "It's song-oriented, if you will. I think I really zoned into really fine-tuning what I've learned over the years and what I've been influenced by.

"And once again it's a very cohesive piece of work. That's what matters for me, making an album that's a compilation of good songs that all sound like they belong together."

Marsha Ambrosius, Chrisette Michele and Melanie Fiona perform at 8 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 18, at the Detroit Opera House, 1526 Broadway. Tickets are $80, $70 and $50. Call 313-237-7464 or visit www.livenation.com.
