Rapper, actor and Wu-Tang Clan leader RZA comes to town this weekend primarily to hype the martial arts action film "The Man With the Iron Fist," his debut as a director and screenwriter. But he can't help but use the occasion to hop on stage, which he's been doing in cities throughout the movie tour.

"When we come to do music, that's so unpredictable on stage," says RZA (real name Robert Diggs), 43, who also supervised the film soundtrack, on which he performs songs with the Black Keys and Flatbush Zombies as well as with Wu-Tang Clan. "The main thing I'm promoting is the the film, so I'm celebrating. We come there and we're hanging out, and we let the spirit takes us where it takes us.

"The most important thing is we're gonna have fun and a good time. If we get a little wild, it's because it's a celebration, baby."

RZA teamed with Eli Roth on the script for "The Man With the Iron Fist," which opens Nov. 2. The movies was filmed in China and is being "presented" by friend and mentor Quentin Tarantino, with Russell Crowe and Lucy Liu co-starring. RZA says his musical experiences to this point helped him hone the skills he needed for a project of this scope.

"Working with Wu-Tang Clan has prepared me for this, as big an organization that we have," RZA says of the eight-member group. "I'm the guy driving that bus, so it was preparation. But (the movie) was like running a small country, man. We had hundreds of people working for us and so many details, very meticulous ideas that had to be executed and focused.

"But it felt good to take this hiop-hop artistry and really transcend to this movie. I can't wait for people to see it."

RZA performs Friday, Oct. 12, at Saint Andrews Hall, 431 E. Congress St., Detroit. Doors open at 8 p.m. Tickets are $20. Call 313-961-8137 or visit www.livenation.com.
