Regina Spektor says the hardest part of making new albums isn't finding songs. It's deciding which songs to record.

"It's funny because I have so many songs that aren't even on any records yet," explains Spektor, 32, a Russian native who moved to the U.S. in 1989. Her sixth album, "What We Saw From the Cheap Seats," came out in May and is her first set of fresh material in three years.

"Every time I make a record there's so many songs waiting their turn to be properly produced," Spektor says. "It becomes this thing where I try some of them, and if it doesn't feel exactly right or not the right moment, that poor song has to wait another three years, or 10 years.

"So it's alays one of those things where I know there's just so much work to do,a nd I could just sit in a studio for years and work on the stuff I already have."

Spektor likes to be on the road too, however, and this year's touring put her in an unexpected position -- opening shows for Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers in the U.S. and Europe. It looks like an odd fit on paper, but Spektor says it worked out even better than she hoped.

"I was really nervous because I wasn't used to playing arenas and I didn't know what to expect from his audiences," Spektor recalls. "He was kind of nervous for me, too, but his audiences were amazing -- I mean, like, beyond awesome. I felt super-welcomed and listened to, and I learned a lot by playing those big places.

"And then to listen to (Petty's) set every night and all those great songs he has...I love him. He has been an amazing force of inspiration and wisdom in my life. Every time I hang out with him I feel like it's a total privilege."

Regina Spektor and Only Son perform at 8 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 13, at the Fillmore Detroit, 2115 Woodward Ave. Tickets are $35-$65. Call 313-961-5450 or visit www.livenation.com.
