Go-Go's "Vacation" was a blur 30 years ago

It's been 30 years since the Go-Go's released their sophomore album, "Vacation." But in the wake of 1981's double-platinum "Beauty and the Beat," guitarist Jane Wiedlin says the idea of a holiday was wishful thinking for the all-female rock group.

"God, 'Vacation' was such a daze," says Wiedlin, 54. "We had worked so hard to get to somewhere, then 'Beauty and the Beat' came out and everything went so crazy for us and turned our world into a whirlwind.

"So looking back, it was just a blur. We did ('Vacation') up in the hills in Malibu, which was fun, (at) one of those residence studios where you live and work. But other than that, I don't remember much about it."

Though they haven't released a new album since 2001's "God Bless the Go-Go's, the quintet has continued to tour a bit each year since a 1999 reunion. Fresh material is hoped for, but, Wiedlin notes, "there's talk and there's reality. It's definitely within the realm of possibility, but we're kind of scattered all over the place, so it's not exactly as easy as when we were a full-time band living in teh same city."

There is, however, talk of stage musical co-produced by actress Gwyneth Paltrow and using the Go-Go's music, and perhaps some new material to go with that, but Wiedlin -- who's also written and directed a new science fiction short film called "The Pyrex Glitch" and wrote a comic book called "Lady Robotika" -- would not comment on the project.

The Go-Go's perform at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 14, at SoundBoard in the Motor City Casino, 2901 Grand River Ave., Detroit. Tickets are $30-$65. Call (313) 237-7711 or visit www.motorcitycasino.com.
