Circa Survive keeps raising the bar

Four albums in, guitarist Colin Frangicetto says his band Circa Survive is finding it "easier" to keep raising its creative bar rather than harder.

"I think it comes with age and experience," says Frangicetto, 30, the former who co-founded the progressive-leaning modern rock group during 2004 in Philadelphia after a tenure in the band This Day Forward. "I think for some reason our opinions, creatively, have kind of grown together, and this was the easiest and most enjoyable record to make."

The album in question is "Violent Waves," which came out in August and debuted at No. 15 on the Billboard 200 chart. "We were all just in the same place, it felt like, the entire time -- what we thought was interesting, what we thought was good seemed to be pretty similar," Frangicetto says. "It made decisions easy. There was just a clear rapport with each other, and we never felt at odds.

Besides being Circa Survive's most ambitious work yet, including a seven-minute-plus opening track "Birth of the Economic Hit Man," it's also a self-released effort after the group ended its deal with Atlantic Records -- though the guitarist says the album was largely written by the time of the schism.

"The whole notion that we were doing to do it ourselves didn't have any dramatic effect on how we were communicating creatively," Frangicetto notes. "We were already in that place. But once we made the decision, it did take it to a whole other level of team spirit, which I think you can hear."

Circa Survive, Touche Amore, Balance and Composure and O'Brother perform Sunday, Oct. 21 at the Crofoot Ballroom, 1 S. Saginaw St., Pontiac. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $20 in advance, $23 day of show. Call 248-858-9333 or visit www.thecrofoot.com.
