Circumstances made the recording of Motion City Soundtrack's latest album, "Go," something "very different than we've ever done before," according to frontman Justin Pierre.

The Minneapolis modern rock group parted ways with its record company, Columbia, in 2010. At that point, Pierre notes, "We had a choice in front of us. Did we want to find a label first and go through proper channels or just write and record (an album) and then figure it out." The quintet chose the latter route, actually finishing "Go" during early 2011 even though it didn't come out until this past June on the group's own Boombox Generation imprint.

"We chose to look at our situation in a positive light and just get excited about the total freedom of just doing it ourselves," says Pierre, 36. "We spent a sixth of the amount of money that we did on the last (album) and yet had twice as much time in the studio. That just allowed for more experimentation and the luxury of taking our time."

MCS will be part of the traveling Soundwave Festival during 2013 in Australia and is busy lining up additional tours. And the group is looking forward to doing more under its Boombox Generation banner, though Pierre acknowledges that "this label of ours is in its infant stages. We don't really have a plan as far as world domination or anything; it's jsut an outlet for us to help really small bands we believe in and do whatever we ant to do on our own."

Motion City Soundtrack, Jukebox The Ghost and Now, Now perform Wednesday, Nov. 14, at Saint Andrews Hall, 431 E. Congress St., Detroit. Doors open at 7 p.m. Tickets are $20. Call 313-961-6358 or visit www.livenation.com.
