Chiodos frontman Craig Owens says "there wasn't a person (in the band) who wasn't apprehensive" when he and drummer Derrick Frost returned to the group after departing in 2009.

But after agreeing to "just get together and play some shows and build on our relationships," he's pleased to report that the group is now ready to "go into reclusive mode and start knocking out our next masterpiece."

"We've been writing for a few months. I would say we have over 50 ideas already," says Owens, ??. "Different things are at different stages, obviously, but we've dove in pretty hard...and have gone about all new ways to write, from beginning with acoustic guitars and focusing on the melodies and the structures to the progressive nature of everybody getting in a room and kind of going with what we feel.

"We're not messing around wtih this record. This is the record we've always wanted to make, and nothing is going to stop us from doing that."

Chiodos has three more shows for the year, wrapping up Sunday night, Dec. 9, in Pontiac, while Owens will play his last solo show on Dec. 21 in New York City. The group is touring Europe in February, with January set aside for intensive songwriting and studio sessions, Owens hopes, in the spring.

"I can honestly say we're closer than we've ever been," he says. "We all have the same vision, we're all very focused, all have our eyes on the prize. The shows have been overwhelming; there's not a moment where I can hear myself sing (over the crowds) at any of these shows. It's been amazing.

"So everything feels great, and I really believe that most of that is due to the relationships and the fact that we can all share a common goal and we all know the kind of hard work, dedication and camaraderie it's going to take to get there."

Chiodos, Conditions and Alive In Standby perform Sunday, Dec. 9, at the Crofoot Ballroom, 1 S. Saginaw St., Pontiac. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $16 in advance, $18 day of show. Call (248) 858-9333 or visit www.thecrofoot.com.
