Reel Big Fish trombonist Dan Regan notes that the popular ska-punk group has "pretty much been out on the road more or less non-stop for years now."

And he and his bandmates wouldn't have it any other way.

"It pays the bills," explains Regan, 35, who's been with Reel Big Fish since 1994, two years after it formed in Huntington Beach, Calif. "We're a working band. We don't make a lot of money selling records. We still have to do it, but we make our money from T-shirts and traveling.

"We prefer it on the road. We're a live band. That's where we feel most comfortable. We're more comfortable on stage than in daily life, walking around, so we're happy we get to do it."

Reel Big Fish's last album, "Candy Coated Fury," came out last July and is being well-received by fans, according to Regan. And because it's still in the relative "youth" of its release, thinking about a follow-up seems premature.

"There hasn't been much discussion yet -- although there wasn't much discussion about 'Candy Coated Fury,' " Regan says. "It was like this joke; we kept rolling our eyes and saying, 'Oh, yeah, we're gonna do a new record next year, and it became next year and then the next year.

"Then one day Aaron (Barrett, Reel Big Fish's frontman) sent us all demos and said, 'I'm thinking this is going to be the record.' 'Oh, OK...,' and then we went and did it. So I'm thinking it will happen a lot like that again."

Reel Big Fish and Dan Potthast perform Tuesday, Jan. 22, at Saint Andrews Hall, 431 E. Congress St., Detroit. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $20. Call 3130961-6358 or visit www.saintandrewsdetroit.com.
