The Brooklyn duo Matt & Kim went into their fourth album, "Lightning," "to kind of make the album we want to hear," according to singer-keyboardist Matt Johnson.

That might seem self-explanatory, but he notes that it's not always the case.

"It seems pretty obvious, but I think there's a lot of bands that don't go in like that," says Johnson, 28. "They go in with the intention of making something other people want to hear, where we're like, 'Let's fill the spot of something we'd like to hear in this world' and hope other people feel the same way."

He acknowledges that he and drummer Kim Schifino, who's also his girlfriend, "are not well-educated in our instrumental craft." In fact, they each started playing their instruments when they formed the band in 2005. "We learn a little bit more about those things every year, with every album we make," Johnson says. And, he and Schifino hope, "Lightning" applies those lessons accordingly -- even featuring some songs the duo wrote on guitar.

"It wasn't with the intention of having guitar in the end, because we're not known for having guitar in our songs," Johnson says. "But I came into music on guitar and bass, and I thought there was a different way that I write music when I write it on the guitar, so it was a way to change the dynamic of what we do and only add something new to the core of what we already have."

"And I think it made for some really interesting music on this (album)."

Matt & Kim, Passion Pit and Icona Pop perform at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 21, at the Compuware Arena, 14900 Beck Road, Plymouth. Tickets are $29.50 in advance, $25 at the door. Call 734-453-8400 or visit www.compuwarearena.com.
