Cinderella frontman Tom Keifer's first solo album has been in the making for the past 18 years.

Keifer says he started writing songs for "The Way Life Goes," which comes out April 30, around 1995, when Cinderella first broke up. "It's something that really started in the back of my mind then, and it got put on the back burner and put on the back burner...," recalls Keifer, 52, who also suffered paralysis of his left vocal cord that requires continuing treatment. "I finally came back around to it in 2003. I had this big pile of songs and just started recording tracks."

He didn't court any record companies to release it until it was finished, however. "I didn't want anybody breathing down my neck," Keifer explains. "I wanted to take the time and get ti to where I wanted it. The idea from the beginning was it would be done when it's done and then I'd shop it around.

"I didn't think it was going to take 10 years to make the record, but every record has its path, and this was the right one."

Keifer, who resides in Nashville with his wife and fellow songwriter Savannah Snow, plans to spend the bulk of this year supporting the diverse album, which mixes heavy rock with roots, country and blues tunes. But, he adds, Cinderella remains a going concern and will be back, though it's taking 2013 off after touring steadily since 2010.

"We've really burned it down the last three years, so at the end of the tour last summer we all decided we were going to take a little break," Keifer says. "That's necessary. It was the most years in a row we'd ever done. We had a blast, but it's always nice to step away from it for awhile, and then when it comes back it's that much fresher for you and the fans.

"So this is a perfect window for me to release ('The Way Life Goes') and ride this horse for awhile. But we'll always be doing Cinderella, I think. I've been part of that band for many years. They're my brothers. This (solo album) is just something else I'm doing."

Tom Keifer performs Sunday, Feb. 24, at the Magic Bag, 22920 Woodward Ave., Ferndale. Doors open at 8 p.m. Tickets are $20. Call 248-544-3030 or visit www.themagicbag.com.
