Tegan and Sara wanted to "raise the bar a little bit" on its new album, "Heartthrob." And not just creatively.

Sara Quinn acknowledges that this time out, she and her twin sister Tegan both "wanted to make a big pop record that still felt like us but was also more in line with some of our favorite artists growing up an some of the big pop stars today -- like Robyn and Alicia Keys, Taylor Swift. At this point in our career, that's where we wanted to be.

"It was a little bit of a spring cleaning, looking forward to the future and saying, 'Do we feel satisfied with the size of our career?' And we didn't, so we approached ('Heartthrob') a little differently."

Tegan and Sara are certainly "excited by the results" of what they wrought with "Heartthrob," their seventh studio album. It's given the sisters their best chart positions in both the U.S. (No. 3 on the Billboard 200) and Canada (No. 2), as well as a No. 1 slot on the Billboard Alternative Albums chart. And the first single, "Closer," even topped Billboard's Hot Dance Club Songs survey.

"To see ourselves in the mainstream charts, to do the 'Ellen' show or these types of things, to be covered on 'Glee,' those types of things feel sort of bizarre, but we like it," notes Quinn, 32. "It was actually probably the easiest record we've ever made. It wasn't a struggle at all. When Tegan sent me 'Closer' it was like, 'OK, this is where we're going. This is the energy.'

"So with this record now we feel like we raised the bar a little bit. And that feels exciting."

Tegan and Sara perform with fun. at 8 p.m. Tuesday, June 16, at the Meadow Brook Music Festival on the campus of Oakland University in Rochester Hills. Tickets are $40 pavilion, $29.50 lawn. Call 248-377-0100 or visit www.palacenet.com.
