Trampled Underfoot siblings have blues in their DNA

With a father who played guitar and a mother who was a big band singer, music was in the Schnebelen sibling's DNA as they were growing up in Kansas City, Mo. So it seems only natural they'd form their own band, Trampled Under Foot, which released its second album, "Badlands," earlier this month.

We actually come from a long line of musicians," says singer-bassist Danielle Schnebelen says. "Our great aunt and uncle on our dad's side were in a big string ensemble, our folks did what they did. It's just ingrained in our lineage.

"My brother Nick (guitar) and I fell into music at an early age and Kris had pursued visual art for awhile before he got into drums. We'd been talking about (forming a band) for a few years before we figured 'Why not?' and actually made plans to do it. I figured I'd learn the bass and we'd try it out.

"Everybody told us we were crazy, but I think it was kind of inevitable, y'know?"

"Badlands" finds the trio still deeply, and comfortably, immersed in the blues, a passion Schnebelen says came from their father's discovery of the genre.

"Our dad worked in a record store in his late teens, early 20s, and he had a huge record collection," she recalls. "He had everything from Everly Brothers to (Frank) Zappa and everything in between.

"But it wasn't until the 70s that my dad found the blues. He found Johnny Winter and got himself a Firebird (guitar, by Gibson) like he played and then started going back to Johnny's influences like Muddy Waters, Skip James and got heavily into that. We kind of absorbed it from him, I guess, and it's what we like to play best now."

Trampled Under Foot performs at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, July 21, at Callahan's Music Hall, 2105 South Blvd., Auburn Hills. Tickets are $25 and $15. Call 248-858-9508 or visit www.atcallahans.com.
