Stanley Cup result was big for Taproot singer

Given 13 years together and plenty of touring to support its six albums, Ann Arbor's hard rocking Taproot has plenty of memorable live experiences -- including a stint on OZZFest and Disturbed's Music As A Weapon tours. But a June show in Pittsburgh on the night the Chicago Blackhawks won this year's Stanley Cup will always be a standout gig for frontman Steve Richards.

"He's a huge fan," notes guitarist Mike DeWolf, who co-founded the group with Richards. "So he enjoyed getting to watch (the playoffs) all along. We were at the Pittsburgh Hard Rock the night they won it. We had just gotten on stage and played probably two songs in and all the TV monitors had (the game) on, and everyone was pointing at them going, 'Steve, look, look!'

"So he got to see it that way, which was pretty cool for him."

Taproot is still supporting its 2012 concept album "The Episodes," which Richards and DeWolf had actually conceived about three years before its release. DeWolf, 37, says the quartet is pleased with the project, but Taproot is also starting to get to work on its next album, which DeWolf says he'd like to see ready for release next year.

"We've began writing separately," he says. "We have a couple more shows coming up and a little bit more touring, then we'll kid of come together and knock something out.

"I never really know what's going to happen until it's all the way done. Everything's always changing until the last minute, so I have no real firm vision yet. But that keeps it pretty interesting, too."

Taproot performs at 7 p.m. Friday, July 25, as part of the 4th Fridays in the Park series at Campus Martius Park in downtown Detroit. Thousand Foot Krutch follows at 9 p.m. Admission is free. Visit www.campusmariuspark.org for more information.
