The Turtles are still happy together after all these yeas

Forty-five years after the fact, the Turtles are finding that "Happy Together," their lone Top 40 hit, continues to make fans...well, happy. And that's the theme of the Happy Together Tour the group continues to headline.

"It's like AM radio. We're pushing the buttons for you," says Turtles co-founder Howard Kaylan, who went on from the Turtles to work with Frank Zappa's Mothers of Invention and team with fellow Turtle Mark Volman as Flo & Eddie. "So you have Gary Lewis followed by Mark Lindsay followed by Gary Puckett followed by (Three Dog Night's Chuck Negron) and us, and a finale where everybody comes out.

"It's a great feeling to get out there and still do it and see these wives nudge their husbands in the ribs, 'Why can't you have this much energy?' I know we deliver 'cause we sweat...to do it. We're competing against 17-year-olds out there."

But a point of pride with the tour, he adds, is that it is comprised of original singers delivering their signature hits.

"The thing that drives me crazy about a lot of these classic rock shows is they're not the real guys," says Volman, 66, who this year published a revealing memoir "Shell Shocked: My Life with the Turtles, Flo and Eddie, and Frank Zappa, etc." "If you're gonna see the Guess Who and Burton Cummings isn't showing up, you're not really seeing the Guess Who. It's just not representative of the original group and what your memories are.

"So we try to make sure that the songs we do sound exactly like your memories, with the harmonies and everything else. It doesn't matter if those memories are about how good we were 40 years ago; if we can't deliver on this particular night in the year 2013, that's the memory they'll take away. So we want people to leave with the best possible memory we can give them."

The Happy Together tour with the Turtles featuring Flo & Eddie, Chuck Negron and more, plays at 9 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 3, in the Colosseum at Caesars Windsor, 377 Riverside Drive East. Tickets are $29-$80. Call 800-991-8888 or visit www.caesarswindsor.com.
