"Idol" champ Phillip Phillips is anything but "Gone, Gone, Gone"

Phillip Phillips was certainly pleased to have a Top 10, quadruple platinum hit with his first single, "Home."

But the 2012 "American Idol" winner may be even happier to be having success with its follow-up, "Gone, Gone, Gone," which he hopes will prove he's not just a one-hit wonder.

" Yeah, definitely, I was nervous about that," acknowledges the Georgia-born Phillips, 22, whose debut album "The World From the Side of the Moon" has been certified gold. " 'Home' had done so much and it was just a big song, so I feel truly blessed.

"I couldn't really make decisions for people if they were going to like ('Gone, Gone, Gone') or not. I had to let the song do its own thing and it's done very well, so I'm thankful for everybody liking it."

Of course, "Gone, Gone, Gone" was helped in no small part by its use as "Idol's" exit song during the 2013 season -- although Phillips notes that it was "weird" to watch eliminated contestants leave the show to the sound of his voice.

"Y'know, whenever you can get a song out there in front of that many people, it's cool," he notes. "But honestly, I didn't get to watch any of ('Idol') except the last episode. 'Idol' wasn't really my type of thing, really, ever. But I'm so thankful for it, 'cause it's gotten me where I am today.

"And the little bit I got to see this past year was very interesting 'cause it was like, 'Oh yeah, I've been there. I remember that.' I know so much more now."

Phillip Phillips performs with John Mayer at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 7 at the DTE Energy Music Theatre, Sashabaw Road east of I-75, Independence Township. Tickets are $75 and $55 pavilion, $36 lawn with a $111 lawn four-pack. Call 248-377-0100 or visit www.palacenet.com.
