Just in case you ever wondered, when Loverboy frontman is singing the group's signature hit "Working For the Weekend," he -- like an number of the Canadian band's fans -- has images of the late Chris Farley dancing topless to the song on "Saturday Night Live."

"Oh, sure," Reno, 58, says with a laugh. "I remember I saw it the first time just like everybody else. I was packing my bags after a gig somewhere and had the TV on and all of a sudden they went into that (sketch) and I was laughing my head off. It was nice because I didn't see it coming; I got it just like everyone else got it. It was a classic moment."

And fortunately for Loverboy, the group does not have to deal with topless plus-size men dancing at its shows in the same way Blue Oyster Cult endures excessive cowbell playing -- another "SNL" residual -- when it plays "Don't Fear the Reaper." We're OK in that regard," Reno reports.

Loverboy is in the midst of preparing a new album for release, a follow-up to 2012's "Rock N Roll Revival," for which the group re-recorded nine of its hits along with three brand new songs. The current set will be all new material, though Reno says that some were actually written and even recoded during the 80s but never officially released.

"We started to transfer our two-inch (studio) tapes to digital, and we're listening to everything going, 'Listen to that. What a great song!' " Reno (real name Joseph Rynoski) recalls. "Back in the old days we'd have 25 or 30 songs but could only put nine on an album. So we were sitting on all these beautiful songs -- half of them already recorded and maybe semi-mixed. If you like 'Working For the Weekend' and 'Turn Me Loose' you're gonna love some of this.

"So we've got this cool package of retro-sounding stuff that we've added to a bunch of new things we've written, and it's really exciting. We're looking forward to putting it out for people to hear."

Loverboy performs at the 2013 Chevrolet Rockin' on the Riverfront series at 7:30 p.m. Friday, July 26, behind the GM Renaissance Center in downtown Detroit. Admission is free. Visit www.facebook.com/RockinontheRiverfront.
