Ontario rockers are confident they can handle Kid Rock crowds

Monster Truck isn't entirely sure how it landed a spot as one of Kid Rock's opening acts this weekend. But the hard-rocking quartet from Hamilton, Ont. -- which won this year's Juno Award for Breakthrough Group of the Year -- certainly isn't complaining.

And its members are confident that even in Rock's home town they'll be able to hold their own.

"With the trajectory we've been on and some of the shows we've done in the last little while, we feel like we're more than prepared -- which is a nice feeling," says guitarist Jeremy Widerman, who co-founded the group in 2009 with other Hamilton musicians. "You're always apprehensive in that kind of situation, but a month ago we opened for Guns N' Roses in Quebec City for, like, 30,000 or 40,000 at a festival.

"Doing gigs like that is really exciting, and we've done enough of them where we feel like we've really got our (stuff) together."

Widerman adds that Monster Truck -- which released its debut album, "Furiosity," in May after a pair of EPs -- is still buzzing from its Juno win, which he says has given the burgeoning band a helpful career boost.

"The Juno was a shock," he acknowledges. "That was one of those moments of, 'How did we get here so quickly?' But it gave us access to a lot of mainstream media that hadn't been paying attention to us yet. Hard rock doesn't get as much coverage as pop music or the softer side of things.

"So that was a moment for us where everyone had to pay attention, and hopefully we'll have some more of those, too, as we go along."

Monster Truck performs with Kid Rock and ZZ Top at 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Aug. 16-17, at the DTE Energy Music Theatre, Sashabaw Road east of I-75, Independence Township. Tickets are sold-out. Call 248-377-0100 or visit www.palacenet.com.
