He's still a little "Footloose" and likes to ride into the "Danger Zone," but Kenny Loggins has expanded his musical world during the past couple of years.

In addition to his own work, Loggins is busy making music with Blue Sky Riders, a trio he formed with fellow singer-songwriters Gary Burr and Georgia Middleman. The group has released an album, "Finally Home," and Burr and Middleman usually wind up on stage with Loggins even when he's doing his own material.

"In a nutshell, I'd reached a place where I just couldn't imagine what the next Kenny Loggins record would be -- or, for that matter, wasn't sure I even wanted to make another Kenny Loggins record," explains Loggins, 65. "But years ago I realized that I need to be creative to feel OK, and I can get depressed if I go long periods of time without writing."

Loggins' spirit was buoyed when he met Burr, a former Pure Prairie League member who`s written hits for Juice Newton, Patty Loveless, Reba McEntire, Garth Brooks and many others. "When we sang demos together we sounded like brothers," Loggins recalls. "I kept getting this idea in my head. We just started writing together and decided to be a band, and a few months later I urged him to find us a 'chick' singer-songwriter, and he knew it would be Georgia."

The 61-year-old Burr, for his part, makes some light of the hook-up. "When the phone rang and he said, 'Let's start a band,' I said, 'You know, you could do a lot worse than be in a band with The Gambler," he cracks. "Then somebody explained it was Kenny Loggins, not Rogers, but I went, 'Well that's good, too.'

"I mean, I used to play his songs in college and get girls. It was a big thrill, and I knew we wrote together great. I think this has been a good thing for all three of us, and I know we'll be doing more."

Kenny Loggins and Blue Sky Riders perform at 7 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 25, at the Macomb Music Theatre, 31 N. Walnut St., Mt. Clemens. Tickets are $60 and $40. Call 586-541-1107 or visit www.macombmusictheatre.com.
